ALTERNATIVE CAREERS FAIR: STUDENT ORGANIZING GUIDE

APPENDIX C: PIRG DIRECTORY

Public Interest Research Groups (PlRGs) are nonprofit, nonpartisan organizations directed by students. College students vote democratically to form a PIRG on campus and then assess themselves a fee in order to support it. Student directors employ staffs of professionals, attorneys, scientists, writers and others to help them with their projects. The common principle underlying all PIRGs is that students are citizens and that therefore their education should include experience in recognizing and solving society's problems.

PIRGs work on a wide range of issues, such as consumer and environmental protection, human rights, corporate accountability, energy and government responsiveness. They produce research reports, lobby, litigate and organize for social change at the campus, community and state levels. Listed below are the PIRG state headquarters in the United States and Canada. Call or write to them for issue information and/or referrals to other PIRG chapters and social change groups.
