ALTERNATIVE CAREERS FAIR: STUDENT ORGANIZING GUIDE

APPENDIX Q: MODEL CLASS RAP

Hi. My name is Jessica Cowan and I am working with me Coalition for Alternative Careers. We are sponsoring an Alternative Careers Fair on April 10th and I wanted to invite you all to attend.

Ralph Nader will be speaking in the morning in Weissman Hall. He will be talking about Career Opportunities in the Public Interest.

Then you will have a chance to talk to representatives of more than 35 social change organizations about job opportunities that are available to you after graduation, during the summer break or even internships that you could do while you are still in school.

This fair is a rare opportunity for you to explore public interest jobs-jobs that are challenging and rewarding, and jobs that allow you to bring your conscience to work every day.

Since you're taking this class I know a lot of you are probably interested in Latin America. If your interest in the region is in human rights, in education, or in U.S. foreign policy, there will be organizations represented at the fair that work on those issues. There will be people for you to talk to about what they do and about what you can do. There will also be environmental, civil rights, women's rights, government reform and child welfare groups participating.

There are a lot of groups on this campus that are part of the coalition sponsoring the fair: [list of co-sponsors]. If you want to help us get ready by doing publicity, fundraising, contacting organizations to participate or anything else, you should come to our next meeting on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Room 210 of the main library. That's this Thursday, the 5th, at 7 in Room 210 of the main library. Jim Donahue, standing in the back of the room, is also working on the fair and he is going to pass around a sign-up sheet for anyone who is interested in being contacted about this.

If you don't want to help organize, you can still come to the Alternative Careers Fair on April 10th and I hope that you all will. It's going to be a really great opportunity to find out the opportunities that are out there for you.

Thanks for listening and I hope I'll see you on Thursday night.
