ALTERNATIVE CAREERS FAIR PLANNED

RALPH NADER TO SPEAK

The Coalition for Alternative Careers today announced the University of Southern Nevada's Alternative Careers Fair, to be held on Wednesday, March 20th from 1-5 pm in Grant Gymnasium.

Consumer advocate Ralph Nader will keynote the event, addressing students and the public on "Career Opportunities in the Public Interest" at 12:00 noon in Warner Hall.

"The fair, bringing 60 national and area organizations working for social change to campus, will help meet students' desire for information on alternatives to corporate and government employment," said Ray Whitmore, fair coordinator.

"Public interest organizations often do not have the money or staff to recruit on college campuses as corporations and government agencies routinely do," Nader said. "Career fairs like this one create a vital and infrequent opportunity for students and social change organizations to discuss society's most rewarding jobs."

Groups attending the fair advocate and provide services for a wide range of concerns, including the environment, legal services, health care, homelessness, civil rights and education.

"The career office has witnessed student interest in more information about careers in the public interest and has agreed to take on the fair as one of its annual offerings," Whitmore said.

A panel discussion, "The Myths and Realities of Working for Social Change," will be held at 3:00 pm in Room 303 of Grant Gymnasium. Speakers include Susan Dobbins of Nevadans for Safe Energy, Burt Taylor of the Social Justice Network, Callie Birch of the Youth Advocacy League and David Pennington of the Public Interest Law Center of Nevada.

The Coalition for Alternative Careers is an ad-hoc group pursuing greater student exposure to public interest job and internship opportunities. Its members include the Nevada Public Interest Research Group, the USN Student Environmental Coalition, Nevada Student Pugwash, the Nevada Student Association, the Community Service Center, the USN Peace Studies department and the USN Chaplain's office.
